From Mrs. Thornton - A Special
Notice to Parents
I want to caution parents to be very vigilant about
their child's internet use.
There are many
wonderful things that can be learned via the internet. It's a
great research tool and provides people of all ages the
opportunity to learn about something of interest very
quickly. Unfortunately, there are internet sites that
are harmful, exploitative and dangerous - especially
for children.
Based on
"classroom chatter", we believe that some of our
children are accessing undesirable sites on their
computers at home, then coming to
school to tell their classmates about
them.
Please parents, be aware of what your children are
watching, reading, doing at home. Be especially observant of
the 'surfing history' on your computer.
What you see may surprise you.
Thank you!

UPS
Pilots Rock!
Summit parent John LoGuidice is a pilot for
UPS, and a member of the Independent Pilot's Association, which
makes charitable donations every year to a number of organizations.
He applied for a grant from the IPE on behalf of Summit Academy, and last week,
John presented Margaret Thornton with a check from the IPE for
$5,200!
This was a technology grant for replacing some very
outdated computers in the 6th grade. We also got
a projector for community presentations and
some network thingamajigs for our IT Director.
Thank you, UPS Pilots! Way to go Jacob's dad!

Stacking
cup orders are due to Mrs. Weimann by
Tuesday, February 9!
You
can view and order stacking cups yourself at www.speedstack.com. Go to group order and Summit Academy.
I have a few order
for the mini cups. The cups that we are using in class are the
regular speed stack cups. They help with crossing the midline
and left/right brain development. The mini's help with fine
motor coordination. If you want to change your order it is
possible until the 9th.

Summit Academy Is
A NO-CUSSING Zone
Please reinforce a message
that we are presenting to our students 4th grade and
older:
·
They are role models for our
younger students.
- It is NOT OK to use curse
words, foul language, or inappropriate phrases in
school, even if the teacher can't hear them.
(What the ______? or,
WTF?, "Yeah, that's what she said" as examples)
If a teacher hears a student
using bad language, he or she will receive a warning.
The second time, he or she will lose recess for one week,
and the parents will be notified.
This
has become a particular problem during lunch and recess, when younger
students hear and imitate their older friends. Thank you
for your support in this.

Walk In My Shoes
Walk in your child's shoes - for one hour.
A 'Walk In My Shoes' is a fun and moving presentation designed to help parents,
family members and our community to better understand the
challenges facing children with learning differences.
This is a free presentation, not a
fundraiser. Bring your family, friends, pastor,
dentist - whoever might be interested
in our mission! We will do learning disability
simulations, hear what other parents have to say about Summit Academy, and have a brief
tour of the school.

Quips & Quotes
. . . God Save The Queen!
In social studies, the third
graders were learning about three different types of communities.
The teacher said, "There are
three types - urban, suburban, and . . . ?"
A student jumped up and down and
hollered, "I know! Ruler!"

Going Green Facts & Tips:
. . . water
is a limited resource, too.
A recent government survey
showed that at least
36 states are anticipating
local, regional, or
statewide water shortages by the year
2013.
